NOTE: THIS ARTICLE APPLIES ONLY TO IDENTITY FINDER 3.X AND DOES NOT APPLY TO ANY NEWER VERSIONS. BEGINNING WITH THE IDENTITY FINDER 4.X CLIENT (Released in 2009), OFFICE 2007 FILES ARE DIRECTLY SUPPORTED. THIS ARTICLE ONLY APPLIES TO 64 BIT VERSIONS OF WINDOWS 2000/XP/VISTA/2003/2008 (Pre-R2) - IT DOES NOT APPLY TO WINDOWS 7 or WINDOWS 2008 R2.
In order for Identity Finder 3.x clients on Windows to search any Office 2007 files, it is necessary to have Office 2007 installed or to install the Microsoft Filter Pack. Identity Finder 4.x and later do not have this requirement. If you are using a 32 bit version of Windows, the rest of this article does not apply.
In order for Identity Finder 3.x clients on Windows to search Excel 2007 files on a 64-bit install of Vista with Office 2007 installed, an additional download from Microsoft and is required. Identity Finder 4.x does not have this requirement.
This requirement exists because Office 2007 only installs 64-bit IFilters for the Excel 2007 file format. Since Identity Finder is a 32-bit application, it can only use 32-bit DLLs. With the default configuration of Office, Identity Finder fails to load the 64-bit Office 2007 IFilter.
The solution to this issue is to install the 32-bit filters and register them in the 32 bit registry on the system. While this can be accomplished manually by copying files and editing the registry with the 32 bit version of the registry editor, we have created the following process to automate as much as possible.
Ideally you would be able to download and install the 32-bit Office Filter Pack, however, the executable wrapper around that package prevents it from running on a 64 bit system (even though the msi inside the package installs and registers the 32-bit IFilters for 32-bit only applications without affecting existing 64-bit applications)
The file can be downloaded directly from Microsoft here:
We have also attached a zip file to this article that contains a batch file and an executable to extract the necessary MSI files from the downloaded FilterPackx86.exe.
Please perform the following steps:
- Save the attached file Filter32Update.zip
- Unzip Filter32Update.zip
- Place the downloaded file from Microsoft (FilterPackx86.exe) into the same directory where you unzipped contents of Filter32Update.zip
- Copy FilterPackx86.exe, Filter32Update.cmd, and 7za.exe to your x64 machine (if you haven't already)
- Execute Filter32Update.cmd (this will perform the MSI file extraction and installation)
- Reboot your machine
